Plan before year end, not after

Tax Planning Services in Hagerstown, MD

Planning through the year, while there is still something you can do about the bill.

By the time a return hits a preparer's desk the year is closed and every decision that could have lowered the bill is behind you. Twenty-six years of returns taught me the money is made in October, not April.

So we look at where the year is landing while you can still act: equipment timed properly, the S corp election run through the numbers first, estimates set so nothing lands as a surprise.

  • Quarterly estimated tax reviews so April holds no surprises
  • Entity structure review — sole proprietor, LLC, S corp election
  • Deduction, depreciation and equipment timing strategy
  • Retirement plan and owner compensation planning
  • Multi-state questions for MD, PA, WV and VA earnings

Who it suits

  • Contractors, shops, practices and owner-operators
  • Flat monthly rate, quoted up front
  • Remote by default, local if you prefer

Questions

Tax Planning questions, answered

What is the difference between tax planning and tax preparation?

Preparation reports what already happened; by then the outcome is fixed. Planning happens during the year, while decisions about equipment, entity structure, retirement contributions and owner pay can still change what you owe. Most business owners only buy the first and wonder why the bill never moves.

I live in Maryland but work in Pennsylvania or West Virginia. Does that complicate things?

It is completely normal in this area and it is handled through reciprocity and credit rules between the states. It does need to be set up correctly, because the common mistakes — withholding in the wrong state, missing a local return — cost real money.

When should I start tax planning?

Any time, but the highest-value window is the last quarter of the year, when we can still act on what the numbers show. If you are already into filing season, we prepare the return properly and then set up planning so next year is different.
